Courses at SNO!zone
As part of our commitment to the development of British snowsports, at grass
roots level, one of the things we provide at SNO!zone is BASI Level 1 instructor
courses. These are aimed at the up and coming snowsports enthuasiast who is interested
in developing themselves and their knowledge, of their sport further. These courses
are made up of 4 components: 5 day technical and teaching assesment.
Child Protection module
2 Day First Aid Assesment

and are designed to train and qualify individuals, enabling them to teach within
a controlled environemt in the UK e.g. dry slope, indoor slope.
BASI LEVEL 1 QUALIFICATION SKI AND SNOWBOARD
5 Day Technical and Teaching Assesment (BASI Level 1 course) £395.00
Before applying for a Snowboard/Ski Level 1 Instructor course, students must
be able to:
Ride or ski confidently on red runs, linking rhytmical small radius turns, close
to the falline (snowboard) or ski parallel turns consistenly, coping with varying
terrain.
Have at least 16 weeks experience of riding/skiing on slope and probably more.
Have an understand of client care.
Any clients who are unsure of whether they meet the necessary standard to attend
a Level 1 course, please ask the advice of a qualified BASI member.
Pre Requisites
The following pre requisites must be met before attending a ski or snowboard
Level 1 Instructor course students must have/be:
Complete the decleration on the booking form, and have read and understood all
of the adjacent course terms and conditions, and return to SNO!zone, Milton Keynes.
Be a competent or advanced recreational rider/skier.
Be 16 years of age or older (although any qqualifications gained will be withheld
until the attendees 18th birthday.)
The Course
This is a 5 day training and assesment course which is run seperately for skiers
and snowboarders. The following subjects will be covered and assesed during the
course:
Riding Safetly
Planning, conducting and evaluating an instructing session.
Participating in an accident and emergency activity
knowing and understanding how to improve personal riding/skiing and instructing
performance.
You will need to have an understanding of:
The Central Theme and Beyond
The FIS Rules of Conduct
The Principles of Snowboard/Ski teaching
The structure of Snowsports within the UK
The roles of the Snowports agencies in the UK
Dealing with accidents and emergencies
PLEASE NOTE: This is the entry level course for students who wish to join the
BASI Education System. The qualification is for those wishing to find employment
in non mountain environment i.e. dry slopes and indoor snowslopes. It is also
the 1st stage of the BASI Level 2 qualification.
Course Costs
The total course cost for this course is £395.00.
This includes five days slope use thorughout the duration of the course.
1 years associate membership with BASI (needed to gain license)
Five days parking throughout the course (if applicable)
All course materails
Five days tuition from BASI qualified tutor.
Please be aware a minimum deposit of £100.00 (non refundable/transferable) is
required to book and confirm a course place.
Course Outcomes
The BASI level 1 course is based on a 'pass or fail' criteria in regards to personal
performance and understanding, and teaching practice. Succesful students will
be issued a certificate and be able to work within a controlled environement with
novice and early intermediate snowboarders. On completion of this Licensed Instructor
Level, students are individually debriefed and advised on the degree of preperation
required before presenting themselves for the BASI Level 2 Instructor trainin
gcourse, as well as their competence to work within the controlled environments
of the dry slopes and snow slopes.
Instructor Level 1 Resit Policy
Normally BASI operates a five day resit policy. However, specific to the Instructor
Level 1 module, in most cases a one day resit will only be necessary. Feedback
will be given by the course tutor, should you not pass the course originally as
to which areas you need to improve performance in in order to pass.
Course Completion
Ski and Snowboard Level 1 instructor licenses can only be issued to a student
who has fulfilled the following conditions.
The student must: have completed and passed all aspects of the Level 1 Instructor
training.
hold a current first aid certificate (as specified) issued
by an organisation recognised by the Health and Safety Executive.
have paid the current membership fee to BASI. (yearly
subscription)
have attended the Child Protection module.
have logged 35 hours snow school experience
be 18 years old or above.

All courses are 5 days long and runn 9.30am-5.30pm each day.
CHILD PROTECTION
Aimed at anyone working with children in sport, this workshop presents the basic
principles of good practice and introduces the concept of long term athlete development.
These courses are delivered by Sports Coach UK and BASI.
Courses run 7-10pm and cost £35 per candidate.

FIRST AID COURSES
First Aid certificate needs to be issued by an organization recognised by the
Health and Safety Executive and the course must be at least 2 days, or 14 hours
long. For courses run at SNO!zone, Milton Keynes appropriate clothing and footwear
will be required to complete some practical activities on the slope.
Courses run 9.30am-5.30pm and cost £110.00 per candidate and include a 2 day
parking permit (if applicable) for the duration of the course.

35 HOURS LOGGED SNOWSCHOOL EXPERIENCE
A total of 35 hours minimum of snowschool experience is required as part of
the BASI Level 1 Instructor training course. This may include the following: understand
how bookings are taken and how people are selected into different standards.
shadowing experienced instructors delivering lessons
understanding how customer satisfaction is assesed and
how dissatisifed customers are dealt with
understanding how the customer satisfaction procedures
improve instructor and asministrational practices
taking part in and understanding in house training for
instructors (slope ticket required)
understanding how Snowsports Schools maintain safety standards
and maintain their currency of good practice
understand accident and first aid procedures including
accident reporting
Please note, for shadowing hours to count towards the stipulated 35 hours, they
must be completed after attending the BASI Level 1 course so that candidates are
aware and are able to implement the 'BASI Philosophies' and teaching skills.
